Description
The GL.iNet Flint 3 is a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router built for homes and small offices that need faster local networking, multi-gig wired ports, and more control than a typical ISP router provides. It combines Wi-Fi 7 across 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz with five 2.5GbE ports, an OpenWrt-based software platform, and built-in tools for VPNs, ad blocking, remote access, and parental controls.
Use it when you already have an internet connection and want faster Wi-Fi, better wired networking, and advanced routing features. The Flint 3 is not a cellular gateway. If you need internet from a 4G or 5G SIM card, choose a dedicated cellular router with a built-in modem instead.
Connectivity and Platform
-
Wi-Fi: Tri-band Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be). 2.4 GHz up to 688 Mbps, 5 GHz up to 2882 Mbps, and 6 GHz up to 5765 Mbps, with tri-band MLO support for compatible devices and 2x2 MU-MIMO on every band. Four foldable high-gain external antennas and six front-end modules help improve range and signal quality.
-
Wired: Five 2.5GbE ports, with one WAN and four LAN by default. One LAN port is software-switchable to a second WAN for dual-WAN setups. Multi-WAN failover and load balancing are supported up to 5 Gbps shared. One USB 3.0 Type-A port is included for storage, tethering, or other supported USB devices.
- Software: OpenWrt 23.05-based firmware with the GL.iNet interface and mobile app. Network modes include router, access point, extender, WDS, and drop-in gateway. Built-in tools include WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO, client and server VPN modes, AdGuard Home, guest network, Tailscale, ZeroTier, Tor, DDNS, and free remote management through GoodCloud.
How It Works
With Tri-band Wi-Fi 7, Flint 3 delivers up to 9300 Mbps of total wireless speed across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands for more capacity and fewer slowdowns.
Multi-Link Operation helps compatible WiFi 7 devices use multiple bands more intelligently for lower latency and improved stability.
Five 2.5G ports, OpenWrt flexibility, 30+ VPN services, and USB 3.0 make Flint 3 ready for work, gaming, storage, and secure remote access.
Installation Overview
Set the router in a central location for the best whole-home coverage.
Plug your modem, gateway, or fiber ONT into the 2.5G WAN port.
Use the 2.5G LAN ports for gaming PCs, consoles, NAS, switches, or access points.
Connect your devices and use the GL.iNet app or web interface to set up VPN, AdGuard Home, parental controls, and more
Features
- Tri-band Wi-Fi 7: The latest, fastest WiFI standard, up to 9300 Mbps combined across three separate bands - 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and the newer, 6 GHz.
- Multi-Link Operation (MLO): Allows compatible Wi-Fi 7 devices to use multiple bands for higher throughput and lower latency.
- Five 2.5GbE ports: Instead of a single 2.5G uplink with gigabit LAN, every wired device gets speed 2.5x faster than a gigabit.
- Dual-WAN ready: A switchable port adds a second WAN, with failover and load balancing up to 5 Gbps shared.
- Built-in VPN: WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO VPN performance up to 680 Mbps, with client and server support plus policy routing.*
- Network-wide ad blocking: AdGuard Home for network-wide ad and tracker blocking.
- Parental controls: Manage screen time and site access from the router. The on-device controls are free; an optional Bark tier adds advanced monitoring.*
- Power to handle it all: A quad-core processor keeps things fast even with lots of devices and features running (1 GB RAM, 8 GB storage), plus a USB 3.0 port to share a drive or tether a phone.
* Needs a separate third-party account or subscription: a commercial VPN provider account for VPN client use, and the Bark service for its advanced parental-control tier. On-device controls and self-hosted VPN are free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the GL.iNet Flint 3 have a built-in cellular modem for 4G or 5G?
No. The Flint 3 is a Wi-Fi router for a wired internet connection. It can share a cellular link only if you plug in a compatible USB modem or tether a phone. If you need cellular as the primary internet source, look at a dedicated cellular router with an internal modem instead.
Can I use the Flint 3 as an access point or with my existing router?
Yes. Besides standard router mode, it runs as an access point, extender, WDS, or drop-in gateway, so you can add Wi-Fi 7 and the 2.5GbE ports to a network that already has a router or modem. The switchable WAN/LAN port gives you flexibility in how you wire it in.
Can I run a VPN on it, and how fast is it?
Yes. WireGuard and OpenVPN are built in as both client and server, and both reach about 680 Mbps, which is far faster than most consumer routers. It connects to more than 30 commercial VPN providers and supports policy routing, so you can send only specific devices through the tunnel.
Do I need to pay a subscription to use it?
You don't need a subscription for normal use. The firmware, OpenWrt, AdGuard Home, and GoodCloud remote management are included. Optional paid services are separate: a commercial VPN provider account if you use one, and the advanced tier of the Bark parental-control partner. On-device parental controls are free.
Will I notice a difference if my devices are not Wi-Fi 7?
Yes, but the biggest wireless gains require Wi-Fi 7 clients, especially devices that support 6 GHz and MLO. Older Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 devices can still connect, but they will not use all of the Flint 3’s newest wireless features. You may still benefit from the five 2.5GbE ports, VPN features, ad blocking, remote access tools, and advanced routing options.
