The Waveform Outdoor Gateway Enclosure is a weather-rated housing that lets you install USB-C-powered cellular gateways outdoors without opening, drilling into, or modifying the device.

It’s designed as a straightforward, turn-key solution. Mount the enclosure outside, power the gateway using the pre-installed PoE-to-USB-C splitter, and run a single Ethernet cable indoors to your router. By placing the gateway where cellular signal is strongest, you can often achieve faster, more stable performance than any indoor placement allows.

• PoE++ power and gigabit data: Uses 802.3bt PoE++ to deliver up to 60 W of power and up to 1 Gbps of data to the enclosure. Inside, this is split cleanly into USB-C power and Cat 6 Ethernet for the gateway.
• Outdoor-Rated and UV Resistant: Weatherproof enclosure protects against rain, dust, sun exposure, and typical outdoor conditions year round.
• Lockable Enclosure: The door includes a locking point, allowing you to secure the enclosure with a standard padlock.

Indoor 5G signal is limited by a few predictable factors: building materials, local interference, and signal loss over coax. Relocating the gateway outdoors in a weather-rated enclosure directly addresses all three. 

1. Reduce Wall Penetration Loss

Building materials absorb and block cellular signal. Walls, insulation, and coated glass can easily reduce signal strength by 10–30 dB or more.

Placing the gateway outdoors removes those obstacles entirely, allowing it to receive a cleaner, less obstructed signal from the serving tower.

2. Avoid the Modifications

Adding external antennas to carrier gateways like T-Mobile's G5AR typically requires opening the gateway, attaching cables directly to the PCB, and running coax outdoors. This permanently alters the device, voids warranties, and adds install complexity.

The Outdoor Gateway Enclosure avoids that path. The gateway stays intact and unmodified, mounted outside where signal is best, while connectivity is brought indoors over Ethernet.

3. Improve 5G performance

5G performance isn’t about signal bars. It’s driven by signal quality and available network capacity.

When you move your gateway outdoors, its built-in Wi-Fi will no longer be usable inside your building.

In this setup, the gateway functions as a cellular modem only. Internet is delivered indoors over Ethernet, and a separate Wi-Fi router inside your home provides wireless coverage.

If you’re currently using your gateway’s built-in Wi-Fi, you’ll need to add a standard Wi-Fi router. Most off-the-shelf routers or mesh systems work fine.

What cellular gateways are compatible with the Waveform Outdoor Gateway Enclosure?

The enclosure is designed primarily for the T-Mobile G5AR and is compatible with any USB-C-powered device up to 9.5” tall, 8” wide, 5.1” deep, and drawing up to 60 W.

Will my gateway’s Wi-Fi still work after installing it outdoors?

Technically yes, but it won’t be effective. Once the gateway is outdoors, walls and distance significantly reduce indoor Wi-Fi coverage. We recommend disabling the gateway’s Wi-Fi and using a dedicated indoor Wi-Fi router instead.

What temperature range can the enclosure handle?

The enclosure itself is rated for outdoor use from −5°F to 167°F. In practice, the operating limits of the gateway matter most. We’ve tested the T-Mobile G5AR inside the enclosure from approximately −2°F to 125°F, where it operated reliably. Performance may vary with other gateways and conditions.

Will this enclosure improve my internet speed?

That’s the goal. While the enclosure doesn’t boost signal, outdoor placement lets the gateway connect to stronger cellular signal and sometimes higher-capacity bands, often resulting in faster, more stable speeds.

Does this replace the need for an external antenna?

This enclosure is a non-invasive alternative for gateways that don’t support external antennas. If your gateway has antenna ports or you’re comfortable modifying it, an antenna-based solution may still be a better option.

Can I install this myself?

Yes. The enclosure is pre-assembled. You simply place the gateway inside and mount it outdoors. The kit includes mounting hardware, cables, and everything needed for install. Do I need to drill into my home to install this enclosure?

Mounting the enclosure may require drilling four small holes for the mounting screws. For routing Ethernet indoors, the included window-entry cable allows the cable to pass through a closed window, eliminating the need to drill through walls.
