How it works
The Verizon 5G Network Extender for Enterprise acts as a compact, localized cell tower, transforming your indoor connectivity. Here’s how it operates:
- Secure Connection to Verizon’s Core Network: The extender establishes an encrypted IPSec tunnel over your existing Internet connection, securely linking to Verizon’s backbone network. This ensures seamless communication without compromising data integrity.
- Broadcasting a Dedicated 5G NR and 4G LTE Signal: Once connected, the device generates a fresh 5G and LTE signal, covering up to 10,000 sq ft with its internal antennas. This eliminates dead zones and provides consistent voice and data coverage.
- Automatic Hand-Off for Seamless Coverage: As users enter the building, their devices are automatically handed off from Verizon’s outdoor macro network to the extender’s indoor coverage zone. This ensures uninterrupted connectivity for calls and data, even when moving between indoor and outdoor areas.
- Support for External Antennas and DAS Integration: The extender is equipped with four 2.2-5 ports, 2x for 4G LTE and 2x for 5G NR, enabling the connection of external antennas or integration with a Distributed Antenna System (DAS). This capability expands the coverage area up to 75,000 sq ft, depending on the DAS platform and number of external antennas used. It’s an excellent solution for businesses with unique coverage requirements or larger facilities.
Requirements
To use the Verizon 5G Network Extender for Enterprise, the following requirements must be met:
- Internet Connectivity: Verizon recommends a minimum Internet connection speed of 20 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload, with 50 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload being ideal. The extender does not require dedicated bandwidth, as full utilization is rare.
- GPS Connectivity: Like all femtocells, the Verizon 5G Network Extender requires a clear GPS signal for location identification and timing. The included magnetic-mount GPS antenna must be placed near a window with an unobstructed view of the sky. For setups where indoor placement is challenging, an outdoor GPS antenna can be used (see recommended accessories below).
- Location: The Verizon 5G Network Extender works in all 50 states and most areas of the United States, except for specific counties. Check the coverage compatibility list before purchasing. Note that the device is not functional outside the United States.
- Verizon Enterprise Account: A Verizon Enterprise or Business account is required to activate the extender. If you are not an enterprise customer, you can select “Registered by Waveform” during purchase, and we’ll handle activation and support.
- Compatible HD Voice (VoLTE) Devices: Devices must support Voice over LTE (HD Voice) to connect to the extender. Most smartphones released in the past five years, including all iPhones since 2014 (iPhone 6 and newer) and Samsung devices since 2014 (Galaxy S5 and newer), are compatible.
- Firewall Configuration: If you are on a corporate network, ensure that the following ports are open for communication: 50, 500, 4500, 53, and 52428, or place the extender on a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
If any of these requirements aren't feasible, consider using a cell signal booster as an alternative to the Verizon 5G Network Extender for Enterprise. Otherwise, reach out to us so that we can help guide you to the best solution, and how you might work around these requirements.

Custom Integration
While the Verizon 5G Network Extender for Enterprise functions effectively as a standalone solution, it truly shines when integrated into a larger Distributed Antenna System (DAS) or a comprehensive in-building coverage solution. Designed with scalability in mind, the extender’s 2.2-5 ports allow seamless connectivity to external antennas or a DAS, enabling tailored coverage for facilities of any size or layout.
Our team specializes in customizing kits to meet your specific needs, whether that’s expanding coverage to multiple floors, accommodating high-density user environments, or integrating with existing infrastructure. Reach out to us, and we’ll help design a solution that ensures seamless, reliable connectivity across your entire space.
Optional: Outdoor GPS Antenna and Surge Protection
The Verizon 5G Network Extender for Enterprise includes an indoor GPS antenna with a 21 foot cable, which works well in most installations. However, there are scenarios where an outdoor GPS antenna may be necessary:
- Extended Distance from a Window: If you're installing your extender more than 30 feet away from a window, an outdoor GPS antenna can bring the GPS signal indoors.
- Low-E Windows: Buildings with Low-E (low emissivity) glass often block GPS signals. An outdoor antenna ensures consistent GPS connectivity in such cases.
To integrate an external GPS antenna with your Verizon 5G Network Extender, we recommend the following accessories:
- PCTel 40 dB GPS Timing Antenna: A high-gain antenna with a built-in amplifier for optimal GPS signal reception, along with integrated lightning protection for added safety.
- Mount Kit for GPS Timing Antenna: The PCTel GPS antenna doesn't include any mounting hardware, so this mounting kit provides a secure and flexible installation solution for the GPS antenna, ensuring it stays firmly in place.
- Waveform 50 Ohm Lightning Surge Protector with N-Connectors: This surge protector should be installed between the GPS antenna and the extender to safeguard the system from lightning strikes. Detailed installation instructions can be found in our Lightning Surge Protection Guide.
- Waveform RS400 Coaxial Cable: You’ll need two lengths of cable - one to connect the GPS antenna to the surge protector and another to connect the surge protector to the extender.
- Waveform SMA-Male to N-Female Pigtail Adapter: This adapter is required to interface the N-Type connectors on the GPS antenna and coaxial cables, with the GPS port on the Verizon 5G Network Extender.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if my Internet connection goes down?
If your Internet connection goes offline, the Verizon 5G Network Extender for Enterprise will stop working until the connection is restored. If you need a solution that operates without Internet connectivity, consider using a cell signal booster instead.
Is the Verizon 5G Network Extender for Enterprise compatible with 1xRTT, 2G CDMA, or 3G service?
No, the extender only broadcasts 5G and LTE signals. Most phones released since 2014, including all iPhones from the iPhone 6 onward and Samsung devices from the Galaxy S5 onward, support Voice over LTE (HD Voice), which is required for calls and texts over the extender. Devices without VoLTE compatibility will not work.
Can I use multiple Verizon 5G Network Extenders for Enterprise in the same building?
Yes, you can install multiple extenders in the same building. Devices will seamlessly hand off connections between extenders, providing uninterrupted coverage. Refer to the Deployment Guide for recommendations on placement and configuration.
Can I restrict access to specific users?
No, any Verizon device within range of the extender will automatically connect to its signal. The extender supports up to 64 active users and 300 idle users, ensuring sufficient capacity for most environments even with unknown devices connected.
Do I need to configure my firewall for the Verizon 5G Network Extender for Enterprise to work?
Yes, you’ll need to open the following firewall ports: 50, 500, 4500, 53, and 52428. Alternatively, you can place the extender on a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) within your network for seamless operation.
How can I check if I’m connected to the Verizon 5G Network Extender for Enterprise?
You can confirm your connection by dialing #48 from your device. You’ll hear an announcement confirming your connection to the extender.
